When I am asked to write my ‘artist’s statement’, two questions come to mind…why I make art and how I make art. As a mural artist and illustrator for the past 15 years, my work is site-specific and its subject matter is chosen by the client. I like to be given a set of problems, a specific environment, and the responsibility for the creation of a significant work of art that reflects the common objective of all those involved. I must bring the client’s vision to life and, most importantly, beautifully execute the work. There is a point, while designing the work, when the subject becomes mine—I am making choices and becoming intrigued by the subject. I find great satisfaction in research and in the unknown adventure that follows as a result of exploring a subject I might not have chosen on my own.

As for my mural work, I have always had a deep connection with the public and the work created during the WPA era. My primary concern is communication. I enjoy exploring the visual world, its light, textures, and symbolism and the blending of humor and nostalgia. By studying trends and patterns in nature, history, and sociology, I strive for a provocative landscape of forms that illustrate their complex relationships. From these rhythms and patterns, I create a flowing composition where the realistic elements can rest. It is important to me that first and foremost the art is about components of light, color, and composition. I tend toward more graphic composition rather than overly detailed. I love the sensuality of the brush stroke and the fluidity of linear design that takes you in and out and across the canvas. I believe that design and execution should take precedence over subject matter. How the two are balanced is extremely crucial; however, it is always the execution of the work that gives me the greatest pleasure.
